If you service a generator set, an excavator, a water pump or any Yanmar-powered machine running a 4TNV88, this guide will tell you exactly what the engine is, what it takes to run, and which spare parts actually matter. The 4TNV88 has been Yanmar's workhorse four-cylinder for two decades, and it is still the first engine most repair shops learn to service.
1. What the 4TNV88 actually is

The Yanmar 4TNV88 is a 2,190 cc, four-cylinder, four-stroke, liquid-cooled, naturally aspirated diesel engine built on Yanmar's TNV platform. It is a vertical in-line design with direct fuel injection, gear-type forced oil lubrication, and an electric starter — the layout you will find in almost every Yanmar small industrial engine in service today.
Two things define the model name, and understanding them makes parts ordering dramatically easier:
- 4 = four cylinders.
- T = three (water-cooled) — Yanmar's internal code for its liquid-cooled family.
- NV = a mid-weight, 88 mm bore platform. "N" denotes the bore class, "V" the series revision.
- 88 = the bore in millimetres, giving the 88 × 90 mm bore-and-stroke combination.
Because the 4TNV88 shares its bore family with the 4TNV84, 4TNE88, 4TNV94 and 4TNV98 series, a large share of its wear parts are interchangeable across the family. That is good news for buyers stocking parts for mixed Yanmar fleets: a well-chosen 4TNV88 parts inventory covers a lot of machines.
On the power side, the engine covers the range most equipment needs: 16.4 kW at 1,500 rpm up to 35.4 kW at 3,000 rpm in maximum rated output. That wide spread is exactly why the 4TNV88 shows up in both low-speed, high-torque pump and compressor duties and in high-speed generator sets.
Quick identification tip: if the flywheel housing is PTO-mounted on the flywheel end, the engine rotates counter-clockwise viewed from the flywheel. Knowing this prevents the classic mistake of fitting a starter from a clockwise (CW) Yanmar engine and watching it spin the wrong way.

5. Where the 4TNV88 is used
Because of its balance of power density, simplicity, and serviceability, the 4TNV88 has a very wide installed base:
- Generator sets — 20–35 kW standby and prime power units, both low-speed (1,500/1,800 rpm) and high-speed (2,400/3,000 rpm) configurations, including open and silent canopy sets.
- Water and drainage pumps — centrifugal pump drives, particularly the CL version at 1,500–2,200 rpm.
- Construction machinery — small excavators, mini excavators, backhoe and skid-steer units, vibratory rollers, compact loaders and site power units.
- Agricultural machinery — combine harvesters, rice transplanters, irrigation pumps and grain handling equipment.
- Compressors and hydraulic power packs — screw and piston air compressors, hydraulic power units.
- Marine and auxiliary power — yacht auxiliaries and small craft, where the counter-clockwise flywheel-end PTO is convenient for direct coupling.
Parts cross-reference you should know: a substantial number of wear components on the 4TNV88 are shared with the 4TNV84, 4TNE88, 4TNV94, 4TNV98 and 4TNV98T. Check the interchange list before you order a separate part — you may already be able to reuse existing stock.
6. Common failures and the parts that fix them
Having handled a large number of 4TNV88 programmes, we can tell you what actually fails on this engine, in rough order of frequency:
| Symptom | Likely cause | Parts typically required |
|---|---|---|
| White/blue smoke, oil burning | Worn piston rings, glazed bore, valve guide wear, worn oil scraper | Piston ring set, cylinder liner/sleeve, piston, valves & guides, full gasket set |
| Low oil pressure warning | Oil pump wear, relief valve stuck, oil filter blocked, bearing shell wear | Engine oil pump, oil filter, main & con-rod bearings |
| Overheating, steam from radiator | Failed coolant pump, perished hoses, blocked radiator core, cracked head gasket | Coolant pump, head gasket, full gasket set, radiator, thermostat |
| Hard starting / no start | Injection pump wear, clogged fuel filter, air leak, worn starter or solenoid | Injection pump, fuel filter, fuel nozzles/ injectors, starter motor, stop solenoid |
| Loss of power, black smoke | Restricted air cleaner, worn injection pump, excessive fuel delivery, low cylinder compression | Air cleaner element, injection pump, injectors, piston rings & liner |
| Excessive noise / knock | Worn main or con-rod bearings, collapsed crankshaft bearing bush, loose flywheel | Main bearings, con-rod bearings, crank bushes, crankshaft |
| Ticking from the top end | Exhaust valve clearance out of spec (0.73 ± 0.06 mm) | Valve adjusters/shims, valves, guides, valve seats |
| Belt squeal / fan belt slip | Worn V-belt, pulley misalignment or worn pulley | V-belt, crankshaft V-belt pulley, cooling fan pulley, tensioner |
| Water in oil, oil in coolant | Failed head gasket, cracked head or block, worn oil cooler core | Head gasket, cylinder head, engine oil cooler, full gasket set |
| Full engine overhaul | Multiple above, or hours exceeded after water damage / long-term neglect | Rebuild kit (piston rings, liner, gaskets, bearings), cylinder head, or a complete 4TNV88 engine assembly |
Service intervals worth knowing
- Engine oil: check level and condition every 250 hours or daily; replace at the interval specified by the operation manual, typically every 500 hours with a mineral-type oil of the specified grade.
- Oil filter: replace with every oil change.
- Coolant: 2.7 L for the engine alone; check coolant level and strength regularly, and flush the cooling system when reusing a refurbished assembly.
- Valve clearance: check and adjust at 0.73 ± 0.06 mm.
- Oil pressure @ rated speed: 0.34–0.49 MPa (CL) / 0.39–0.54 MPa (VM) — use this as your post-repair acceptance test.
- High idle speed: confirm against the sheet before sign-off; a mis-adjusted governor is a leading cause of overspeed failures on refurbished units.
7. How to order the right 4TNV88 parts — 7 questions to ask
The fastest way to a correct quotation — for you and for us — is to have answers to these seven questions ready:
- Is it a 4TNV88 CL or VM? Check the nameplate suffix, or measure the cooling fan pulley.
- What is the engine serial number? This identifies the production batch and spec revision.
- Which parts do you actually need — assembly or components? Single part, gasket set, short block, or complete engine assembly.
- What application and operating hours? Generator, pump, excavator, or other — and hours since the last rebuild.
- Any reference part numbers on the old parts? Old stamped or laser-marked numbers save days.
- What standard is the part required to? Genuine Yanmar, or a replacement supplier built to the same dimensions and tolerances.
- What is your target delivery date and destination port? This decides shipping method and whether stock or production is required.
Photos are worth more than descriptions. A clear shot of the nameplate, the failed part from both sides, and the installation area removes almost all guesswork.
8. Frequently Asked Questions
Is the 4TNV88 turbocharged?
No. The standard 4TNV88 is naturally aspirated — there is no turbocharger in the standard build. Turbocharged variants in the Yanmar family are separate models (for example the 4TNV98T and 4TNV106T). Never fit a turbocharger to a naturally aspirated 4TNV88; the exhaust manifold, fuel system and charge-air path are not designed for it.
What does "CL" and "VM" mean on a 4TNV88?
They are two build versions with different rated speed bands, weights, dimensions, oil pressures and belt pulley sizes. CL is the low-speed version (1,500–2,200 rpm, 183 kg, 683 mm long); VM is the high-speed version (2,400–3,000 rpm, 170 kg, 658 mm long). Parts differ between the two — always confirm before ordering.
What oil does a 4TNV88 use?
Above approximately 5°C, use SAE 10W-30, 15W-40 or the grade specified in the operation manual for your climate and duty. Below 5°C use SAE 5W-30. The oil pan holds 4.0 L to 7.4 L between the dipstick lower and upper limits — add oil gradually and check the level frequently on a rebuilt engine.
Why is my 4TNV88 hard to start when cold?
Most common causes are a cold-soaked glow-free start with no intake preheat on older installations, a weak battery (the spec calls for 12 V, 64 Ah), a clogged fuel filter drawing air, or worn injectors. Check the battery and terminals first, then bleed the fuel system and verify injector delivery pressure.
Can I interchange 4TNV88 parts with the 4TNV84 or 4TNV98?
Many wear parts are shared across the 88 mm-bore family, but not all. Confirm each part number against the interchange list before substituting — dimensions and ratings can differ even when the printed part number looks similar.
Should I buy a complete engine assembly or individual parts?
If the failure is limited to a single component — a fuel pump, starter, water pump or head gasket — buying the component is far more economical. If the engine has water damage, low compression across all cylinders, or unknown service history, a complete assembly or short block is the more economical choice. Send us the symptom description and we will tell you which route makes sense.
What documents do I receive with a complete assembly?
Supply scope is agreed in writing before shipment — typically the engine assembly, the specified accessories, packing on export-grade pallets or crates, and the relevant inspection records. Requirements for CE, EPA or other certification documents can be discussed at quotation stage, subject to availability.
